Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a common skin condition seen in up to 20% of children. Children with eczema typically suffer from dry, red, itchy skin that can cause significant discomfort and impaired sleep. We believe eczema is caused by a breakdown of the skin barrier and an increased immune response leading to inflammation. We also understand that bacteria on the skin may drive some of the inflammation seen in atopic dermatitis. There are many potential triggers including prolonged exposure to water without moisturizing, overly dry climates, low humidity, emotional stress, overheating of the skin, harsh soaps, fragrance and bubble baths.
After taking a thorough history and performing a complete skin exam, our physicians will be able to determine if your child has eczema. Gentle skincare is one of the most important parts of repairing the skin barrier and preventing eczema outbreaks. We will go over a personalized regimen detailing how best to care for your child’s skin. Our doctors will determine what therapies are most appropriate in treating your child’s condition. Potential treatments include topical steroid ointments, barrier repair creams, oral anti-histamines and light therapy.
