Birthmarks

Birthmarks include any skin lesion that is recognized at or around the time of birth.  They are generally classified as either vascular or pigmented birthmarks.  Pigmented birthmarks include congenital moles, café-au-lait spots and congenital dermal melanocytosis (Mongolian spot).  Vascular birthmarks include salmon patches (stork bites, angel kisses), infantile hemangiomas and port wine stains.  There are many other types of birthmarks, but they occur much more rarely.  If you or your pediatrician is concerned about a birthmark, our physicians can diagnose and treat a variety of birthmarks and we recommend that you come in immediately.
