As the skin ages or experiences sun damage, collagen and elastin fibers dissolve, which leads to wrinkles, drooping, and changes in skin texture. Fractional CO2 laser treatment is the best way to stimulate regrowth of collagen and elastin, reversing those changes. This is also known as collagen induction therapy. The laser works by stimulating the skin in fractions (individual dots spaced in a grid) — this method allows tissue regeneration while decreasing the risk of side effects.
At Presidio Dermatology, we customize our fractional CO2 laser treatment to the patient. For example, we can adjust the depth of the treatment or even hone in on problem areas like around the eyes or mouth. We can also use settings that are more preventative in nature and address scars and acne marks. Depending on the degree of treatment, downtime can range from 4-10 days. Most patients will schedule one to two treatments, spaced a few months apart. Some immediate tightening is visible, and collagen production continues for 6 months.
